The artistic refuse disposal facility in Osaka: Maishima Incineration Plant

You can see the most beautiful garbage disposal site on Maishima Island, Osaka. There are so many people who go to Universal Studios Japan near the plant, but only a few enthusiasts visit the site. The plant was designed by Mr. Hundertwasser, an Austrian artist, and architect, and the exterior is like a fancy mosque.
When I visited there almost 15 years ago, I couldn’t believe that these buildings were the incinerators for Osaka citizens. Usually, a garbage combustor has a very simple exterior, but Osaka City paid 60 billion yen to build this facility!
You can also enjoy the factory tour. First, you must attend a mini-lecture about the plant’s history and the garbage incineration system. I hope you can get some English leaflets now, but there was no English information when I was there.  After the lecture, your exploration starts and you can see the extraordinary interior of the plant.
Today, we must wait to reserve a tour of this site because of the coronavirus. But I really recommend you to come and take a look at the outside and inside of the world’s most beautiful incineration plant made especially for Osaka residents!
