Do you know about the threadworm inspection which had been enforced at all elementary schools in Japan? Yes, I’d had this examination long ago. However, students nowadays don’t know the name of this test because Japanese hygiene management runs almost perfectly recently. In fact, I’ve never encountered the threadworm infection at my outpatient care. Almost all parasite infections are caused by Anisakis now.
Anyway, you can enjoy the parasitological history and the real worms preserved in formalin in Meguro, Tokyo. This Meguro Parasitological Museum is a very unique one that was founded by Dr. Satoru Kamegai as his private research institute. Now, it is a public interest incorporated foundation and the entrance fee is free. I’ve been there in the spring of 2004, just two years after the founder’s death. There were so many specimen bottles with blue velvet cloth on the back of each bottle because almost all of the worms’ bodies were white. They don’t need to have body colors or eyes in our dark intestines. I recommend you to check the 8.8-meter-long tapeworm that is the main exhibition of this museum.I couldn’t believe that this long creature lived in someone’s body. Also, you can buy a key holder with resinous Anisakis or a tapeworm T-shirt as a souvenir.
