Green Buddha Is in the Center of Nagoya: Toganji Temple, Nagoya

I was in Nagoya because I had to attend a one-day meeting in the Spring of 2021. Nagoya is a big city and there are so many sightseeing spots. I hadn’t enough time to visit several viewpoints, so I decided to go to a bizarre temple: Toganji Temple. There is the Nagoya Daibutsu in the temple, which was colored dark green on his whole body. It is a very rare case because almost all statues of Buddha are black or gray. I don’t know why this Buddha is green, however, the shape and color had a big impact on me when I found him on a website. I arrived at Centrair Airport at two o’clock in the afternoon last Saturday, so I went to the temple by train.

Fortunately, there weren’t too many people in the temple, and I was able to appreciate the statue of Buddha and the inside of the temple. The temple was built in 1712 for an old Sengoku samurai, Mr. Nobuhide Oda, who was the father of the famous Sengoku samurai, Nobunaga Oda; so the temple has a long and distinguished history. However, this 15-meter-tall statue was made in 1987 and colored green in 2006. Here are the pictures of the statue.

I also took a video of the statue and uploaded it on YouTube. Please enjoy it. The temple also has its own museum too. It costs 1000 yen per person and you may feel it is expensive for the entrance fee. However, it is worth paying because there are some other statues of Benzaiten and lingas in the museum. Unfortunately, taking photos was prohibited inside so I can’t show you pictures of the statues. Anyway, I really recommend that you visit there when you visit Nagoya City, because this temple exists in the center of downtown Nagoya.
